My dad didn't know Chinese, he still gets a job, earns lots of money...."

I always argue with the tuition teacher. He says I'm his worst student..."
"There're so many words I don't know..
I think I'll fail the exams..."

Shyue Chou, yes I'm a chinese teacher. surprising? or i sounded more like an english teacher?
GASP! Scary! You are so proficient!
As for English teachers, I have heard horror stories of those who can't string a sentence, let alone, speak proper English.
haha... yeah, i thought i speak better english than some of the english teachers-to-be back when we were attending this course called Communication Skills.
but of course, they were only the minority.
some of them are just poor souls who were being forced to teach that subject because of the system.
Yes, you are right, I have heard of these teachers.
Some years ago, I had an editor in my team. She was an English teacher and yet she could barely write. Her work was full of mistakes. My predecessor who was of a Chinese orientation in outlook, speech and more, was able to spot a lot of her mistakes.
The quality of her work was ghastly.
As for Chinese, I am still amazed at the proficiency. Why? Basically, I have almost forgotten everything.
It's pretty much Greek to me.
which means half the time you have no idea what on earth i'm rambling about??
and you still frequent this site?
i'm touched. *teared*
hehe, another chinese teacher to join the fun.
Dear bluemoon, how r u? it took me some time to finally start my blog. :-p stil much to learn from...
"if something doesnt matter to you after few months, it is not a matter at all!"
" half the time "
To be frank, it is most of the time... Heheh.
May I know how you retain your proficiency throughout the years? Was it through usage?
Was it through reading the papers?
Was it through reading books?
Are the compositions you have on your blog all yours? Verses?
Sorry about asking all these questions. I recall to get a B during O levels all those years ago, I had to memorise 20 essays, 500 sayings and 500 pre-constructed sentences. It was quite a bit of work. Fortunately, I had a good memory then and I managed it.
which language are you referring to?
if it's english, i just got the hang of it after awhile.
i got a E for my O levels, and my higher chinese got me through to jc. after which, i made myself study the oxford dictionary, to prepare for the retake, and practise on essay-writing. it's crazy, but i got through my retake with a B3, so i'm complaining.
as for my chinese, it's acquired, not learnt, just like you and your powderful england. ;)
I am referring to your Chinese. You seem fluent though I really don't know.
Do you read Chinese novels? Do you read Chinese papers? Watch TV? How? How is it acquired?
oh that.
i dont know how to answer you. it's there since the day i was born.
Do you have an inherent gift for languages? What of other languages?
A linguistic gift?
As I said, it's acquired. When we said a language is acquired, we meant that our fluency in it is achieved through the environment, not learnt at the later stage of our lives.
An acquired language usually happens to a person of age 0-5. At that stage, it's said that we learn unconsciously, hence the fluency.
that's why i said it's inborn.
linguistic gift? i do hope so though. :)
